Suddenly your old favorite password isn’t good enough. Some sites will ask you for variety in your password. Some want more than five or six characters.

Others demand a mix of upper- and lower-case letters, while still others ask for a combination of numbers, lower, and upper case letters. And finally the most terrible, paranoid sites not only require a combination of all these aspects, but have the gumption to add a security question or two.

Some very clever password creators have figured out a few tricks. One is to place your trusty old password, plus a number or two, in the middle of two letters–the first and last letter in the website name. There are other tricks out there of which I’ve heard, but I’ve forgotten them. Just as I’ve lost my memory of passwords I’ve created in the past for different accounts.
