How to Fix USB device or drive not showing up in My Computer nor Windows Explorer
On some computers the USB device: Ipod, Jumpdrive, flash drive, mp3 player, external harddrive, external dvd, external cd or mass storage device does not show up in my computer nor windows explorer. In my previous entry, I gave a possible usb drive not showing up workaround. In this entry, I will give you a possible solution that worked for me. I now have the USB devices displayed in My Computer and Windows Explorer again. INTERESTING NOTE: This USB problem seems to show up the most on Windows XP Professional. Here is what you want to do to fix the USB problem :
- go to c:\windows\system32\drivers
- find one or all of these files: secdrv.sys, sptd.sys and sptdXXXX.sys (XXX is a number)
- rename or delete these files
- reboot your machine
- re-insert your USB device
This should get your USB going again in My Computer. Olan Butler Kansas City Computer Repair

I had spent countless hours trying to fix a USB hard drive device problem with my computer with no success. I was trying everything I came across and becoming increasingly frustrated with none of it working. I then came across this http://www.computingsuccesssecrets.com/computer-hardware/how-to-fix-usb-drive-not-showing-up-in-my-computer-nor-windows-explorer/ and decided to give it a try (even though since it seemed so basic I figured it wouldn’t work), and to my amazement it actually worked! I just wanted to thank you for posting that way back when because it finally solved my problem.
